Most leather you bump into on Amazon is chrome-tanned — fast, cheap, and finished to look the same on day one and day one thousand. That’s fine for disposable gear. It’s not what I want on my belt.
Veg-tan (vegetable-tanned) leather is made with plant-based tannins — traditionally bark and wood extracts — instead of chromium salts. The process takes longer. The leather comes out firmer at first, then softens and darkens as you carry it. Scratches blend in. The color deepens. It starts looking like your gear.
That’s the trade I want for EDC holsters and wallets: something that holds shape for a tool, then earns a patina instead of peeling a coating.
I buy Wickett & Craig full-grain vegetable-tanned cowhide out of Pennsylvania for everything I sell. Same tannery on the multi-tool holsters, the wallets, the customs. When I say veg-tan, I mean that — not a marketing word glued onto mystery leather.
If you’ve never owned veg-tan before: expect it to change. That’s not a defect. That’s the material doing its job.
